Google AdSense Tutorial - Why Borders Form The Frontier Between Making Money And Making Nothing

When Google created their content adverts and made them available for ordinary people like you and me, they made a huge mistake. They had borders around their ads as default. Any serious Google AdSense tutorial should deal with that question, so read on to learn why borders can separate you from your goal of making money with AdSense. A frontier is a line or border separating two countries. When the adjacent countries are enemies, the frontier is very clearly defined, maybe with high towers, barbed wire, sharp shooters, etc.

However, when it comes to making money with AdSense, the borders will not separate you from enemies. They are the enemies themselves. And I'll explain why. To begin with, everything on the Internet was free. People wrote great content, and put it online for free. Visitors could surf from site to site and learn or be entertained, without ever having to pull out their purse. Nevertheless, it's not free for the site owner to run his site. He has to pay the yearly domain fees, he has to pay for web hosting, and maybe he even has to purchase graphics, coding or other things related to his site.

So, since people didn't expect to pay for information, people had to come up with other ways of getting compensation for their efforts and expenses. Enter advertising bureaus, who saw their chance at dominating a whole new market. Sadly, only the biggest sites with thousands of daily visitors could join their exclusive programs. These sites were given some 468x60 banners to put on their sites, and they were paid according to the number of visitors, who passed by.

The visitors, in return, would click on those banners to visit the advertiser's sites, and maybe do a purchase there. Still, over time, people found out that they often just got distracted by those banners. They were not what they were after. They were searching for information, and they were given advert. They developed a sort of banner blindness. Without even knowing it, they learnt to skip the banners, when they were skimming a site for information. They learnt that a picture or text with a border around it, sized 468x60 were useless for them, so they stopped seeing it.

And this is why you should avoid the border around your ads. They show the visitors that this is just an advert, and that they don't want to click on it. You can't just remove the border from your AdSense advert, so you have to choose the same colour as your background so that the border does not show.
